Jihad: A Wake up Call!

Jerusalem Cloakroom #228, October 23, 2009

1. Jihad (Holy War) has been a cardinal feature of Islam since the 7th century. It constitutes a clear & present danger to Western democracies, irrespective of the Arab-Israeli conflict, independent of the Palestinian issue and regardless of Israel's policies and existence.

Jews in Hebron – Obstacle to Peace?

Jerusalem Cloakroom #227, September 24, 2009

133 Jews were murdered in Hebron, Jerusalem, Motza, Safed and Tel Aviv during a rampage of Arab terrorism in August 1929, 19 years before the establishment of the Jewish State, 38 years before the 1967 War and 39 years before the return of Jews to Hebron. 133 fatalities in 1929 – out of a 175,000 Jewish population – are proportionally equal to 4,560 fatalities in Israel or 230,000 fatalities in the USA in 2009!

US Pressure – A Guide for the Perplexed

Fact: In 1950, the US Administration pressured Israel to refrain from Jewish construction in Jerusalem and from declaring Jerusalem the capital of Israel – Prime Minister Ben Gurion built, relocated government agencies and thousands of immigrants to Jerusalem and declared Jerusalem the capital of the Jewish State. In 1967, the US Administration pressured against annexation of East Jerusalem – Prime Minister Eshkol annexed, reunited Jerusalem, and built the formidable Ramat Eshkol neighborhood. In 1970, the US Administration pressured Israel to relinquish control over parts of Jerusalem – Prime Minister Golda Meir constructed the neighborhoods of Gilo, Ramot and Neveh Yaakov (current population over 100,000!). The US Administration pressured, Israel constructed, Jerusalem expanded and the Jewish State earned strategic respect.

Judea and Samaria – A Wake Up Call

http://www.news1.co.il/Archive/003-D-40095-00.html?tag=14-58-25, August 08, 2009

The public debate on the future of Judea and Samaria is top heavy with sound bites, but very low on serious examination of national security implications. Conventional wisdom suggests that ballistic missiles and advanced military technologies have undermined the importance of ground barriers, such as the mountain ridges of Judea and Samaria. Is that true?

Prime Minister Begin's "Jerusalem-Response" to President Obama

Jerusalem Cloakroom #225, July 24, 2009

Ambassador (ret.) Yehuda Avner, who served under five Prime Ministers, writes in his forthcoming book (summer 2010), The Prime Ministers – An Intimate Portrait of Leaders of Israel:

A Jerusalem Response to Obama

Twenty five towns in the United States, from Massachusetts to Oregon, bear the name of JerusalemSalem.  This is a reflection of the unique bonds that exist between the USA – since the 17th century Pilgrims and the Founding Fathers – and the Jewish capital, land, history and religion.

The US Congress – the most authentic representative of the American People – has passed a series of bills and resolutions, reaffirming the role of Jerusalem, as the indivisible capital of the Jewish State and the appropriate site for the US embassy in Israel.

The US-Iraq, Judea and Samaria Linkage

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3746153,00.html, July 13, 2009

In 1967, Israel demolished the military forces of Egypt, Syria and Jordan. Consequently, Israel developed the "Low Probability Arab Offensive" concept. The 1973 War – along with Mideast unpredictability and objective intelligence constraints - devastated that concept, threatening the Jewish State with oblivion.

In 2003, following the US occupation of Iraq, Israel recycled the "Low Probability" concept. Israel assumed that the US military in Iraq precluded the possibility of a conventional Arab offensive on Israel's eastern front – a lethal threat to Israel's "soft belly" (Jerusalem and greater Tel Aviv).  However, in 2009, that concept has been rendered obsolete by the gradual US evacuation of Iraq and by the lowered US military profile in the Mideast, which have energized Mideast radicals. The gradual US withdrawal from Iraq should free Israel from the "Low Probability" delusion, thus preventing a 1973 War-like disaster.

The President Proposes but Congress Disposes

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3741070,00.html, July 01, 2009

President Obama and his advisors pressure Prime Minister Netanyahu to avoid intensive contacts with Congress.  They claim that such contacts would undermine the Presidency, and would therefore damage US-Israel relations.  However, refraining from such contacts would demote Congress into a "Supporting Actor", and thus would be an insult to the American People, to its representatives on Capitol Hill and to the US democracy, which regard Congress as a "Co-Starring Actor." In the long run, it would degrade vital Israeli interests and weaken US-Israel relations.

But, Settlements Obstruct Peace…

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3732514,00.html, June 14, 2009

Prime Minister Netanyahu is wrong to assume that his June 14 speech will soften President Obama's strident criticism of "settlements" (Jewish communities in Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria). At the same time, President Obama is wrong to consider "settlements" as an obstacle to peace.

Obama Pressures? No Need to Panic!

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3727711,00.html, June 05, 2009

President Obama's speech in Cairo intensified psychological pressure on the Jewish State.  Obama erodes Israel's special standing in the US.  He has adopted evenhandedness and moral equivalence toward Israel (a staunch democratic ally, a role model of counter-terrorism) and toward the Palestinian Authority (an ally of US' enemies, a role model of terrorism and hate-education). He ignores Israel's ancient history, suggesting that the justification for its existence is rooted in the Holocaust. And, he has transformed "Settlements" into the crux of the Arab-Israel conflict, although Palestinian terrorism and Arab wars against Israel preceded the 1948 establishment of the Jewish State and the 1968 establishment of the first "Settlement."
